Edit a PrestaShop or WooCommerce XML product export

By Quentin Delepierre, Salesforce Commerce Cloud consultant

Running an e-commerce catalog and need to change hundreds of product entries? Instead of going one by one in the admin, export them as XML, edit them in Excel, and re-import. Here's the full method.

The bulk-editing problem

PrestaShop, WooCommerce, Magento and most PIMs can export the catalog as XML. But that format is built for machines, not human editing. Changing a margin across a whole category, translating descriptions or fixing SKUs quickly becomes unmanageable by hand.

The fix: convert the XML to a spreadsheet, make your changes with the tools you know (formulas, filters, copy-paste), then regenerate the import XML.

The method

  1. Export your products as XML from your store (native export module or extension).
  2. Drop the file on ExcelifyXML: the free preview shows the detected row (one row per product, one column per attribute) before any credit is used. Confirm to get the CSV (1 credit).
  3. Edit in Excel — for example apply +10% price on a selection, or a find-and-replace on descriptions.
  4. Drop the edited CSV with its skeleton.json on the Rebuild page: the original hierarchy (categories, variants, attributes) is restored.
  5. Re-import the file into your store.

What to know about the round-trip

ExcelifyXML keeps attributes, nested elements and field order, so the XML stays accepted by your import. Multilingual fields (per-locale tags) are preserved as separate columns.

Standard e-commerce import behavior: an empty or missing field means "don't change the existing value". So even if an empty self-closing tag disappears in the process, your import won't overwrite anything by mistake.

Watch out for EAN-13 codes and references with leading zeros: opened by double-click, Excel rewrites them ("3.61235E+12", "00123" turned into "123"). Import the CSV with Data › From Text/CSV, those columns as Text. ExcelifyXML points out these columns from the preview on, and the reconstruction stops if a code turned into scientific notation.

Works on Mac, Windows, Linux

Everything happens online, no install: both transformation and reconstruction run from the site, on any browser — Mac, Windows or Linux.
